I spent a summer apple picking with Romanian workers not far from the village where my Grandmother had grown up. Both Romania and the area of Newark have distinct historical workwear which I looked to combine in this piece, bringing together the style and design of Romanian blouses with embroidery found on Newark smocks, depicting the local landscape and river Trent.
In this century as identities merge and are shaped by their surroundings, I hope we as people can help nurture each other through what can be difficult transitions.
Set sail
The paprika bag is a talisman from my near ancestors, something to guide me into the future. In 19th Century Hungary the spice became one of the people, a cheap alternative to pepper. In this century we will cultivate creative solutions to harbour a similar equality.
The ship, a sampler of English cross stitch, leads us to new directions and discovery, a symbol of our collective European journey into the future.
